Zolcal-D - Calcium & Vitamin D Supplement for Laying Hens

Zolcal-D is a veterinary-formulated liquid supplement that provides supplementary dietary calcium and vitamin D for laying hens. It is designed to help ageing layers maintain optimal health while supporting shell quality. 

Chicken Vet recommends Zolcal-D for hybrid laying hens over 50 weeks of age, rehomed ex-commercial laying hens at any time, and rare breed layers during and after their second laying season. 

Why Choose Zolcal-D?

As hens age, their calcium requirements increase while their ability to absorb and mobilise calcium from their bones gradually declines. Although layer pellets and meal contain calcium and vitamin D, these levels may no longer be sufficient to meet the demands of egg production in older birds. 

Vitamin D promotes the absorption of calcium in the gut and helps maintain normal calcium and phosphate concentrations in the blood, supporting normal bone mineralisation. Calcium is also required for eggshell formation, with some being supplied from the hen's bones. Without an adequate supply, ageing hens can become more susceptible to reduced bone density and thinner eggshells.

While Zolcal-D may not completely prevent thin eggshells, as this is partly a natural consequence of ageing, it provides ageing layers with additional calcium and vitamin D to help maintain optimal health and improve shell quality.

How Zolcal-D Supports Eggshell Quality

A laying hen requires approximately 4g of calcium each day, with around half used for eggshell production and the remainder supporting normal physiological processes.

As hens age, their ability to absorb calcium and mobilise calcium reserves from bone decreases. Providing supplementary calcium and vitamin D through drinking water helps ensure birds receive additional nutritional support during this stage of life.

Directions for Use

Administer Zolcal-D in fresh, clean drinking water. 

• Use 10ml per litre of drinking water
• For intermittent shell quality issues, use for 5-7 days
• For older laying hens, use continually at the recommended rate 
• Prepare fresh solution as required
