If you’ve ever dealt with red mites in your coop, you know how frustrating they can be. Home Shield is a strong adhesive liquid that dries to form a chalky protective coating on surfaces to help dry out and eliminate red mite fast!
Home Shield is an at-home version of Fossil Shield, which is used by over 300 poultry farms across the UK and Ireland, protecting more than 9 million hens. Working up to 12 times faster and lasting twice as long as traditional diatomaceous earth products – giving you peace of mind and your flock feeling their best.
What is Home Shield, and how does it work?
Home Shield is designed to grip onto surfaces, cracks and crevices to create a tough, chalky barrier they can’t avoid. This unique silica-based formula dries to form a coarse, protective layer that stays in place long after application. As red mites crawl through it, the coating gently scratches their outer waxy shell, helping to dry them out and stop infestations in their tracks.

Why choose Home Shield over other red mite treatments?
You’ll find that Home Shield is much more effective in high humidity than other products on the market, and adheres much better to surfaces, which means it doesn’t need to be applied as often. It is also authorised for treating red mite, which many other products aren’t.
When can I use Home Shield?
You can use Home Shield all year round, however for best results, the air temperature should be between 5 – 25 degrees when the product is applied.
Can Home Shield be used on any type of house?
Yes, Home Shield can be used on any type of house.
Once applied, how long will Home Shield remain active?
Home Shield should remain active for 3-10 months. However, the length of time that it will remain active in your house will depend on the quality of application, the mite infestation, the equipment and the climate in the house.
How often would you recommend applying Home Shield to keep red mite to a minimum?
It is important that you treat any red mite infestation as early as possible so that the population is prevented from multiplying. Mite traps and sticky pads are a great way of checking if there are mites present in your chicken coop.
We also recommend that Home Shield is reapplied when a house has been cleaned and disinfected, as some mites will always survive in partition walls, pipes and sockets.
The product shouldn’t be used more than 8 times in a laying period (14-24 months).
Can Home Shield be used as a preventative product or only when red mite is present?
Yes, Home Shield can be used as a preventative product.
Is it safe to eat eggs from hens treated with this product?
We would recommend collecting eggs before spraying the product. The eggs and chickens shouldn’t be sprayed directly; however, there is no problem if the eggs subsequently touch the product.
